When did you begin singing or playing an instrument?
I have always loved to sing. I began performing in public at age 10. I had taken piano lessons when I was about 6. I started playing guitar when I was about 12. My dad said, “Hayley, you can’t be a country music singer if you don’t know how to play guitar!”
What inspired you to become a singer/songwriter?
There was never a certain point when I decided that singing was what I wanted to do as a career. It just made sense to me that I should do what I love for the rest of my life. Music is the biggest part of who I am.
What genre would you call your music?
Definitely country/pop! I love how real country music lyrics are and I love the country music community. I also love pop melodies and beats.
Is there anything you have learned from being a singer/songwriter?
I have learned a lot about who I am as a person. My music represents me. I have learned that anything worth having is worth working hard for.
What does it mean to you to be a singer/songwriter?
It makes me feel special, especially living in the town where I am from. There aren’t many people here my age who do what I do. Most people at school know me as “Oh, Hayley Payne? She sings, right?” I am okay with that!
What part about being a singer/songwriter do you enjoy most?
My favorite part about being a singer/songwriter is seeing how my music affects people. I absolutely love how music brings joy into people’s lives; sometimes people who I don’t even know. How cool is that? Music allows me to be a small part of other people’s lives. Music can let people know that they are not alone, that other people are feeling the same things as them, or it can simply make people feel good.
Have you made any friends because of being a singer/songwriter?
Yes! That is one of my other favorite parts 🙂 I have made lifelong friends through our connection of music. It is nice to be friends with people who experience the same things as you, and appreciate your love of music!
Have you traveled because of being a singer/songwriter?
The farthest I have traveled for a gig is about 6 hours. I have played in Ohio a few times, one time being the Ohio State Fair! I also visit Nashville a lot due to being a singer/songwriter and it feels like my second home.
Have you done something exciting because of being a singer/songwriter?
I have recorded songs in the past, but this year I am working on recording my first actual project. I am SO excited! It is amazing to see a song that you created come to life. Recording music is a wonderful feeling, and I can’t wait to share it!
