Featured Artist Interview today is with Makayla Potts!
Makayla Potts is an Indie Pop singer/songwriter from Texas.
At what age did you begin singing or playing an instrument?
I have been singing my whole life. I always looked up to my mom who sang on the worship team and then shortly after I started to sing for the child’s choir in church and have been singing ever since. Guitar came later when I was 16. I was self taught and had been watching YouTube videos to help learn how to play chords and songs I wanted to cover.
What inspired you to become a singer/songwriter?
What sparked my inspiration was my mother singing on the praise and worship team, but also listening to a song called “skyscraper” by Demi Lavato. That song touched me in such a way and I connected with it so much I knew right then that I had such a passion for music and I had to sing and learn to play an instrument inspiring others like Demi inspired me.
What genre would you call your music?
My genre is indie pop with just the right amount of soul(:
Is there anything you have learned from being a singer/songwriter?
I have learned so much from being a singer and a songwriter. One thing I’ve learned about being a songwriter is it takes a lot of time and practice. It’s like a faucet that only runs completely dirty water… When you first start songwriting the water may be completely brown and the song will not be great, but you should always finish a song you started… Eventually, the water will get clearer and clearer and you’ll really get a handle on how to write a song you absolutely love and when you really know it, you’ll be able to perform it in front of people and it’s so exhilarating to be able to sing your original song whether it’s the first one or the one hundredth!
What does it mean to you to be a singer/songwriter?
There is not enough words to describe what it means to me to be a singer/songwriter. It is such a God given talent of mine and to be blessed with it is so much more than I could ever ask for.
What part about being a singer/songwriter do you enjoy most?
What I enjoy the most about being a singer/songwriter is being able to meet so many amazing and talented people and work with them… I learn a lot from other people whether that’s when songwriting or vocally. I also love being able to help others. Being able to give them tips and pointers is definitely rewarding and makes me feel very good about my songwriting or voice when people ask for help or just want to collaborate and work with me.
Have you made any friends because of being a singer/songwriter?
I have made many friends! You meet so many people being a singer/songwriter. I also perform a lot so I tend to meet a lot of people at shows who take my information and follow me on social media and we become friends through that.
Have you traveled because of being a singer/songwriter?
I have traveled to Tennessee and California to perform.
Have you done something exciting because of being a singer/songwriter?
I think in general being a singer/songwriter is super exciting and very rejuvenating. It’s so amazing being able to write a song and someone come up to you and tell you that it really touched them or they can relate to it and really liked it! Being a musician is a lot of work and takes a lot of dedication, but the people you meet, the friends you make, and the experiences you get out of it are worth every bit of hard work you put in!
